History
In 2004, the statistical agencies in Canada, the United States and Mexico all identified the same problem: the need for closer harmonization of agriculture statistics and easier public access to indicators across the continent. The solution? All three countries came together to create the North American Tripartite Committee on Agricultural Statistics (NATCAS). Each agency is structurally organized in a different fashion, but all share a similar goal – to learn from one another’s experiences to better serve users’ agricultural data requirements within each country and across North America.
Although the members of the different working groups communicate with one another regularly by emails or by video conferences, the entire committee meets in person only once a year. To ensure that the working groups remain on track, final approvals are made, the NATCAS mandate is upheld and that the annual meeting be as productive as possible.
Here is the timeline of key events (right) as well as the years and countries that have had an agricultural census (left) since the committee’s inception.
